  • Dear Arthur Berman:

I finally get time to look seriously into the industry’s Arps type curve and figured out the b parameter you mentioned so often.

    Read my takes.

I see an immediate problem when the industry uses a b>1, the hyperbloic case. Mathematically it leads to divergence, meaning the cumulative production can go to infinity at infinite time.

Any math student can immediately see you can NOT allow b>1 in the Arps formula. I wonder why the shale gas industry experts will come up with type curves that allow b>1. That is ridiculous.

Another comment I have is the Arps formula has two few freely adjustable parameters. Just the UP, initial decline rate D, and a b factor. This might be baely sufficient to decribe initial decline behavior. But there is no freely adjustable parameter to reflect the long term terminal decline.

Long term terminal decline MUST occur as the resource is limited. I believe my formula, containing one extra parameter, may be better than the Arps.

    Any comment please?
